My Love Story: Roses Are Red

On my thirtieth birthday, I came to a realization that I was too busy being single

In addition to that, I was also, too busy vying, for the title of “Miss most-number-of weddings-baptisms-children’s first-birthday parties, attended.”

Be that as it may, I decided, it was time I hosted mine.
Well, I could have, you know -let alone one important detail—I was very much single, while sporting a unique birth sign:
 “the no-boyfriend-since-birth sign”

In like manner, my love life was not even, a peek to a preview of love, marriage and carriage.
Guess who was always stuck in a book, work and church?

Why my single life was NOT defined with, “partying with boys, came as no surprise.  I out-talk, as my mother would say, any guy, any date, any time. Or as in one of my brothers’ words, “maka -annoy“. Yeah, that is me, sometimes.

There were options really.

First, I could have always shut up and taper down my vitamin dosage.

Second, I could have stopped talking about tagalog movies and Dingdong Dantes for once, during a date.

Third, I could have stopped bringing opinions about the country, while on a blind date.

Fourth, I could have also stopped arguing with a date and started a real normal conversation, like normal people do, on a date.

Fifth, I could have stopped talking about, how beautiful my family, my brothers and sisters are.
In short, I could have stopped “me” from being myself.
Sixth, I could have enrolled in a pole-dancing class and I would have been, wickedly clever about it.
( daahr n, -the places it could have brought me, then)

Seventh, I should accept that fact that I was bio-engineered to be single

( and there was nothing wrong with that).

However, I was comfortable and pleased with my single status.

As a matter of fact, it was a very happy single life. I was surrounded by family and real good friends. It was just that I came from a big and happy family, as a result, I wanted one too.  Perhaps, I just was not able to determine, on my own, which path I should take.  Maybe,I was a bachelor girl and not too clairvoyant.
So, I sought divine intervention. I asked Him-up-there to help me out. If He did give me a spouse, I would have been very grateful and if not, then maybe, He had other plans for me. I sought His help.

I too, prayed the novena of St. Raphael every night. I also asked for three signs.

A Prayer, A Song and A Book

St. Raphael : For the Choice of a Good Spouse

I knew God will answer me, but well, I just added a little bit of flair to my prayer –by asking for signs.

One of the signs I requested from God, was that of receiving red roses, on the second meeting, with my future spouse. I did ask for something impossible and on the second meeting  at that.

( as Vice Ganda would have said, ” Agad, agad, sa second meeting? Puedeng sa 10th meeting na?”)
It was a tall order. So, I prayed to God and told Him that I was amenable to any type of rose -roses in any form, real, paper or plastic will do.
The night before going out, on a second date with my husband (a James Patterson fan),  I mentioned on the phone that the book I was reading, was a Patterson entitled “Violets are Blue”.

He told me that I should read the prequel to that book. He said he will lend it to me the next day. (our second date)

It was weeks later, after all other signs I asked God, were already fulfilled that I realized the significance, of what my husband actually gave me, on the second date.

Arguably, it may not have been, the red roses I had envisioned, but I knew, no doubt, God had a hand on this:

ROSES ARE RED by James Patterson.

(well, sabi ko naman kay Lord, red roses in any form… ) Then I knew my husband was my ” future man” .  (parang si iron man, lang)

With my husband though, it was different, since on the first day he met me, he immediately told his family that he knew then and there, I was the one he was going to marry.  ( agad, agad , Rapunzel leaves the building, I come in )

As I was getting to know my husband,  I was anticipating for “the colors that last longer in a love story” kind, maybe, a Rhett Butler line, “You should be kissed and often, and by someone who knows how.”

I was also waiting for him, to get us out of the friend/dating zone.  Then one day, my future man , in a Rhett Butler delivery, ( but better)  said,
” I’ve got to know where I stand. I just got to know where I am with you.”

The voice and the manner, he used with those lines, swept me off the friend zone and we became “us”.

( Ramon Bautista was not even around, and that is how “ma-abilidad” my husband was. )

Speaking of which,  it was maybe a year after being married to him that he asked me to listen closely to one of his favorite songs.

And the song on the car stereo,  went like this:

I’ve got to know where I stand
I just got to know where I am with yoouuuuuuuuu.

So here’s penny for your thoughts, a nickel for a kiss

A dime if you tell me that you love me

Penny for your thoughts, a nickel for a kiss
A dime if you tell me that you love me

Walkin’ holdin’ hands, you say you’re mine all mine
Then soon another face steals your eyes away.

“Huwaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? ( tires screeching ) It was the Tavares brothers who said that?”

Well, it is the week of our eighth wedding anniversary, so I thank God, the Tavares brothers, James Patterson, and my husband’s abilidad.

( now, sweetie, about that pole dancing class I considered once…)

” I’ve got to know where I stand. I just got to know where I am with yoouuuuuuuuu”
– Richard Ang Sen, on the friend zone.
